Google's Head of Design, Ivy Ross, Confirms Existence of Second Canceled Foldable Pixel
|
Ivy Ross, the head of design for hardware products at Google, recently
confirmed the existence of a second foldable phone that was ultimately
canceled. This revelation came to light during a recent episode of the Made by
Google Podcast.
During the podcast, Ross admitted that the design of the device did not meet
Google's high standards and was deemed unsatisfactory. As a result, the
project was abandoned before it could reach the production stage. According to
Ross, the team wanted to release a product that was "better than what was out there already". He said in the podcast:
I’m really proud of the team because there was another foldable model that we had created that we had the discipline to say, “nope, it’s not good enough yet,” and really wait until we felt we could do something that was good enough or better than what was out there already. So it’s really a testimony to the fact that we’re able to do that and recognize when something isn’t good enough.
Google made waves on May 4th, 2023, with the announcement of the Pixel Fold,
its own entry into the foldable smartphone market. Further details about the
Pixel Fold were unveiled on May 10th during Google's annual conference, Google
I/O, which primarily caters to developers.
While the concept of foldable phones is gaining traction, the market is
still in its early stages, with Samsung taking the lead, followed by Huawei
and Xiaomi. However, one of the major hurdles hindering widespread adoption
is the high price point of these devices. Google's Pixel Fold is no
exception, starting at a hefty $1799. Pixel Fold is expected to give
Samsung's Foldables first truly fierce competition. Pixel Fold is equipped
with an outer 5.8 inch screen and an internal 7.6 inch screen.
Despite the price challenge, Google is optimistic about the potential of the
Pixel Fold. The device is available for pre-order on
Google's online store, with an enticing offer of a complimentary Pixel Watch to sweeten the deal.
