Microsoft's Smartphone Misadventure Continues - Surface Duo 2 Joins Nokia Lumia in the Technology Graveyard!

According to information from undisclosed insiders, Microsoft has ceased production of the Surface Duo 2, as reported by Windows Central. Although a limited number of devices might still be available at select retailers, no new units will be manufactured.

While the phone is slated to receive Android security updates until at least October 2024, prospects for further Android OS updates, specifically beyond 12L, appear highly doubtful. Windows Central's attempts to obtain comments from Microsoft regarding their intentions to update the phone to Android 13 or the subsequent Android 14 have been unsuccessful.

In addition to this, Windows Central's report suggests that a "majority" of the software team for the Surface Duo 2 has been reassigned to work on the Android version of Teams Rooms.

Earlier this year, online reports claimed that Microsoft had abandoned plans to make the Surface Duo 3, and had instead decided to work on a true foldable phone. However, there has been no word on the status of that project since then. Moreover, there have been unconfirmed reports that Microsoft could be developing some standard non-foldable Android phones.

Analysis

The Surface Duo 2 made its debut with a hefty price tag of $1499.99, boasting top-of-the-line hardware specifications, including the Snapdragon 888 processor and three rear cameras. However, the phone was plagued with middling camera performance specially under low light conditions and software glitches.

After a tumultuous history with the Nokia Lumia series, Microsoft's decision to abandon future Android OS updates beyond 12L for the Surface Duo 2 is rather disappointing. This stands in contrast to Samsung, which guarantees four major Android OS upgrades and five years of security updates for its flagship devices. Microsoft must carefully consider the direction it wishes to take with its Smartphone Division, as it has faced numerous missteps and hasty decisions over the past decade that need to be addressed to ensure a more successful path forward.
