Developers Rejoice! Microsoft Announces a Free Foundational C# Certification

CSharp Foundational Certification

Microsoft's Katie Savage - The Program Manager DevDiv Community - have announced the release of a new foundational C# certification in collaboration with freeCodeCamp - a charity based organization that creates free learning resources for Math, Computer Science and Programming. Speaking about the significance of the certification, she said:

Our Foundational C# Certification provides just that — a testament to the time and effort you’ve invested in mastering this versatile language. While no certification can guarantee a job, adding this to your portfolio demonstrates your commitment to continuous growth and your proficiency in C#.

Partnering with the esteemed freeCodeCamp, our certification is not just a badge, but a mark of quality education. It’s comprehensive, globally accessible, and free. This ensures that learners everywhere can benefit from a robust C# training on Microsoft Learn.

The Foundational C# Certification is available completely free of cost worldwide. To facilitate the learning, Microsoft is also providing a jaw-dropping 35-Hours training course hosted at Microsoft Learn. According to the annoucement, the certification course would cover everything from core C# programming concepts like data types, syntax, control flows all the way to practical software development concepts. Once passed, the certification badge can be shared on LinkedIn to show a peron's authority on CSharp's foundational concepts.

Microsoft is also hosting live 6-hour stream sessions on .NET YouTube Channel starting September 20th till October 25th on every Wednesday at 2PM UTC (8AM Central). In each session, presenters will review a training material, walkthrough a guided project, and answer questions via live chat. Interested individuals can also register for a C# Certification Challenge running from August 28th till October 31st.

Observation

Offering certifications free of charge is a good step in the right direction. Considering most of the certifications are really expensive and are offered by the very companies who also happen to own the product (AWS, Azure, GCP, Oracle etc.), it really looks weird that they charge so much money to certify individuals as experts in using their products. These products themselves have arms and length licensing cost associated with them. I never understand this certification industry - specially the one where the product vendor provides the certification itself.
