Shredded into Threads - Instagram Threads Usage Tanked After Honeymoon Period Ended

Instagram Threads

Short-term attention spans are getting more common and it is infiltrating our day to day activities. Someone could be a hero one day followed by becoming a villain the next day.

Soon after the takeover by Elon Musk, X( formerly Twitter) caught itself into a myriad of controversies and is fighting some of them to this day. Those controversies sparked a concerted efforts towards finding an alternative to micro-blogging platform. Most of it was based on the controversial figure that Elon Musk is and to the new policies he had been introducing to the platform since then.

Instagram's Threads tried to take advantage of one such moment to give a knock-out punch to perhaps the only other viable competitor to Meta in the social media space - X (formerly Twitter). And its success topped the charts initially again, showing the immense level of short-term attention span of the society in general. Meta itself has been perceived as a Villain till then but X became the new villain and Meta was considered a Dark Knight (pun intended)

When launched a couple of months ago, Threads took the techno-sphere by storm. It proved to be the first viable alternative to X (formerly Twitter) and it put the competing platforms like Mastodon and BlueSky into shadows. Threads also got a lot of publicity due to many celebrities joining the blockbuster App.

However, the honeymoon period seems to have ended for Threads. According to a report by SimilarWeb, the number of active users in the United States on the nascent micro-blogging platform has tanked to about 567K down from the highs of 2.3M active users back in in early July. Globally, the number peaked at 49.3M active users and is now down to 10.3M active users - quite a downward trend.

X (Formerly Twitter)'s owner Elon Musk has challenged Meta's cheif Mark Zuckerberg for a boxing match, but things have not yet materialized mostly because of the delays from Musk. Mark Zuckerberg who initially accepted the challenge of the boxing match seems to have moved on after constant delays. He told to his Threads followers:

I think we can all agree Elon isn't serious and it's time to move on. Elon won't confirm a date, then says he needs surgery, and now asks to do a practice round in my backyard instead. If Elon ever gets serious about a real date and official event, he knows how to reach me.

We are pretty sure Mr. Zuckerberg has better things to worry about than the boxing match with Musk right now. May be this round belongs to Elon without even wearing the boxing gloves!
